Should you trap your lost cat? PDF Print E-mail
Is it to your advantage to put out a trap in the hopes of capturing your cat that got outside?

If you decide to put out a trap, be sure it is a humane trap. Hav-A-Heart makes a good one. If you live in the country, understand that you might end up trapping another feral cat, a raccoon, a possum, even a skunk. But keep trying. You could eventually trap your cat as well.

You can rent these traps from animal shelters, vet offices or feed stores. They usually require a deposit, but you get your money back when you return the trap in good condition.
If you don't want to trap your cat then make an alternate secure place outside for her to return to. Use and empty cardboard box, her pet carrier with the door off, a wooden crate stuffed with straw for bedding.
Provide food and water near your home for your cat. Understand that just because the food vanishes at night, does not mean your cat came home. She could have, but the food can be eaten by other hungry critters.
