Page 1 of 4 Despite all your precautions the worst possible thing has happened, your cat has gotten outside and vanished.
So what do you do now?
First of all, unless you have seen your inside cat outside, the first thing to do is search your home thoroughly. Go in every room and sit down on the floor. Look the room over carefully. If there are recliners in the room, check underneath the recliner and the foot rest. Check under the couches, and if you have sofa beds, tip them over carefully and look underneath the frame work. A lot of times a scared cat will claw through the underside of furniture (or bed mattresses) and vanish up underneath. Look inside cupboards, and closets, even if you think that the cat can't possibly get in there. Look up as well. If you have rafters, is the cat hiding in the rafters? Call to the cat softly, keep your stress level down. Listen closely for muffled mews, or signs of scratching. Is there any access to an attic or basement? Check there as well. Rattle your cat's food bag, run the can opener, do everything that you can to get your cat to respond to you inside the house. Think of your home as marked off in a grid. Check each area thoroughly. There is a chance your cat has been injured or frightened and is simply hiding inside. Leave nothing left unsearched. Ok, now that you have satisfied yourself that the cat is not inside, now what do you do? Keeping your stress level down, and your voice calm, walk outside and walk three house lengths from your own home calling your cat. Listen closely, don't just endlessly call, give your cat a chance to answer you.
