Page 6 of 6 Keep your cats indoors. If at all possible, keep your cats indoors. Outside there are so many dangers and the possibility is strong that your cat could be chased by a passing animal and become lost, or worse yet die. If you have to take your cat outside, do so with a harness and leash set-up. Fence your yard. There are now several cat safe fence companies on the market today.
Create a cat enclosure. Build a large cat enclosure off your home if you are able to. Provide a safe and busy place for your cats to run off their energy, or just lay around in.
If you are traveling with your cat, be sure the carrier is secure, and keep your cat inside the carrier while the car is in motion. If you have to stop and let the cat out to use the litterpan, be sure all windows and doors are securely closed first. Most cats will be to stressed to relieve themselves in a car. I always just pad the bottom of the carrier with disposable diapers and keep on driving.
If you are moving to a new place, keep your cat inside your new home for at least a month, before you decide to let it outside. This applies to barn cats, strays and ferals, not house kitties. When you do release your cats be sure and have bowls of tempting canned food set out outside on your property so they know they best not stray to far.
